In and around Hermanus
The cliff path extends for about 10km along the coast from the New Harbour to Grotto Beach and boasts beautiful fauna and flora. The cliff paths offer excellent whale watching opportunities as the whales bask literally meters from the cliffs below you.
Whale watching from June to the end of November. The gentle giants of the deep glide into the bay, as Walker Bay is the breeding ground of the Southern Right Whale, returning each year to meet with the same mate, to produce, and then later, spawn their off-spring, each one heralded on arrival by the Whale Crier - the only one in the world. The whales often sleep or laze the day away almost within touching distance while the more energetic entertain the crowds launching their huge bodies out of the water to come crashing down in massive displays of strength or waving their tails in the air. Whale watching boats leave 3 times daily in season from the Hermanus New Harbour and should be pre booked.
The Hermanus whale festival usually takes place in September. www.whalefestival.co.za
Shark cage diving or viewing from boats is available throughout the year with especially good sightings during our winter (May, June, and July). In season it is advisable to book. Should bad weather prevent the boat from going out you usually are accommodated the next day or when the weather clears.
Hermanus beaches are sandy paradises of sun and sea offering swimming, surfing, sun bathing, horse riding, walks and kite surfing which is very popular and spectacular to watch. Grotto beach stretches for about 15 km's and for most of the 15 km's you won't see a soul.
Hermanus has over 50 restaurants offering stunning food and our local wines.
Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers many mountain paths where you can take in all the fauna and flora. A Farmers market is held there every Saturday morning where you can find some of our local flavours.
The Harold Porter Botanical Gardens and the Penguin colony at Betty's Bay are approximately 30 minutes drive away.
Golf is popular and there are several local courses available including the world class Arabella golf course, the all new 27 hole Hermanus golf club and don’t forget the tricky 9 hole course at Keinmond with its spectacular views of the sea and mountain.
Our Wine Route boasts some of the best wines produced in the country, regularly winning awards. Hermanus is surrounded by vineyards producing high quality wine. We do not have any large scale vineyards, but more the smaller family run operation producing unique wines. Wine is relatively cheap in South Africa and is on par with the best anywhere.
Sea kayaking is very popular and no experience is necessary. Very stable kayaks are used with highly experienced guides.
Paragliding is also very popular with the hill directly behind the town used as a take off area making full use of the sea breeze. The sky is often full of brightly coloured Paragliders. Tandem with instructors is hugely popular.
The Birkenhead Brewery in Stanford is 20 Km from Hermanus
The Caledon Casino is only 40 Km away.
Nightclubs, restaurants, walks in the mountain, lots of wine, whale watching, it is difficult to imagine what more you could want.
